What Is Hair Replacement?

Hair replacement is a surgical procedure that moves hair follicles from one area of the scalp to another area where they aren’t growing as well.

Hair restoration treatments that use this method generally involve making several small incisions in the scalp then removing a strip of skin containing healthy hair follicles from the back of the head. The strip is divided into individual units of skin tissue containing one or more follicles each, then carefully transplanted into tiny slits made in the areas where more hair growth is desired. More than one transplant session may be required to achieve desired results. This procedure is also known as follicular unit transplantation (FUT).

What Causes Hair Loss?

A number of factors can lead to hair loss. The most common cause is called androgenetic alopecia, which is an inherited type of baldness that typically affects men more than women. For men, the primary symptom of this type of baldness is a receding hairline on the forehead that eventually meets bald spots on top of the head in a horseshoe pattern. For women who suffer from this type of genetic balding, they may see thinning at the crown or part lines rather than receding hairlines.
